Why Watercolor is One of the Hardest—and Most Beautiful—Art Forms. ft. Aaron Burgers

At first glance, watercolor paintings might seem soft, simple, and light—but don’t let that fool you. Behind every piece is a technique that demands precision, patience, and years of practice.

Watercolor vs. Acrylic & Oil: What’s the Big Deal?

  1. Acrylic paint is bold and forgiving—it dries fast, layers easily, and can be painted over multiple times.

  2. Oil paint is slow to dry, giving artists ample time to blend and manipulate colors on the canvas.

  3. But watercolor? It’s a whole different world.

Watercolor artists have to think in reverse—preserving white space rather than adding highlights later. And because the paint is transparent and fluid, there’s little room for error. Once the paint hits the paper, it’s there for good.

The Water Element

Water is both the paint’s partner and its wildcard. Too much and it floods the paper; too little and it loses the signature softness. Every painting is a balancing act.
